Definitely idiotic decisions. And it seems clear that happening in Germany, the problem is definitely a kind of moral relativism run amok. Ironic to have "judges" whose notion of their role is to avoid "judging!"
But for me this is more than anything else an argument for unapologetic secularism in the law. The same kinds of rubbish somebody pulled out of the Quran to justify abusing his wife exists in the Bible as well. But we also (generally) know better than to give any respect in the laws of our country to extreme passages from our "holy books." The humanistic ideals of the Enlightenment that animated the founders of the US are the foundation for that wise course.
Yup, hopefully we can keep that perspective in our own courts, but sometimes I worry with all of the nonsense going on these days!
